Introduction
Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) is a relatively common enzyme found in the mitochondria of hepatocytes. Elevated AST levels may indicate cardiac disease or hepatic disorders, such as viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, or hepatocellular carcinoma. If cardiac enzymes are also elevated, myocardial injury is more likely. Conversely, if alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and/or bilirubin levels are concurrently elevated, viral hepatitis becomes more probable.

Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), commonly known as serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), is a relatively common enzyme found in the mitochondria of hepatocytes and serves as an indicator for assessing liver function. What does elevated AST signify?

What Does Elevated AST Indicate?

Elevated aspartate aminotransferase levels may indicate cardiac or hepatic disease, such as viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, or hepatocellular carcinoma. If cardiac enzymes are also elevated, myocardial injury is more likely. Concurrent elevation of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) or bilirubin further increases the likelihood of hepatitis.

Mild to moderate AST elevation may be managed with medications that lower enzyme levels, such as Hepatol (a proprietary Chinese medicine), Hepatoprotective Tablets, or Compound Glycyrrhizin Tablets. Chronic viral hepatitis is the most common cause of elevated transaminases; without timely treatment, progressive hepatocyte damage and declining liver function may ensue. If oral medication proves ineffective, intravenous infusion of hepatic hydrolytic peptides may be considered.

In daily life, opt for light, easily digestible foods and avoid greasy, raw, cold, or spicy and irritating foods. Consume more fresh vegetables and fruits rich in vitamins. Prioritize adequate rest—avoid staying up late regularly and ensure sufficient sleep duration. Drink plenty of warm water to support metabolic processes. Engage in appropriate physical exercise to enhance immune function and overall resistance. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
