Introduction
For the treatment of pustules, antibiotics are currently the primary therapeutic approach. The specific treatment strategy should be selected based on disease severity. Typically, most patients require oral or intravenous administration of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory agents. Topical medications—such as erythromycin ointment—are often used concurrently to prevent infection; alternatively, systemic treatment with cephalosporins or erythromycin may be employed.

Impetigo is a serious acute infectious disease, commonly seen in children, though a small number of adults may also become infected. Prompt treatment is essential upon diagnosis. What exactly is impetigo?

What Is Impetigo?

Impetigo is a contagious bacterial skin infection caused primarily by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes (beta-hemolytic streptococcus). It is an acute, purulent dermatosis that tends to occur during the hot, humid summer and autumn months—conditions under which outbreaks are especially common among children.

Multiple factors can predispose individuals to impetigo, including crowded environments, skin breaks or abrasions, compromised immunity, and humid climatic conditions. Lesions most frequently appear on the face, limbs, and trunk, presenting as pustules, vesicles, or bullae. These lesions are prone to rupture and ulceration, often forming characteristic yellowish crusts.

Antibiotics constitute the mainstay of current impetigo treatment, with the specific regimen determined by disease severity. Most patients require oral antibiotics and anti-inflammatory agents; in more severe cases, intravenous antibiotic and anti-inflammatory therapy may be necessary. Topical treatments—such as erythromycin ointment—are often used adjunctively to prevent secondary infection. Oral cephalosporins or erythromycin may also be prescribed.

Maintaining good personal hygiene is crucial for prevention: keep the skin clean and dry, drink plenty of water, consume fresh vegetables and fruits regularly, and engage in consistent physical exercise. Any clothing, towels, or other items that have come into contact with impetigo lesions should be promptly disinfected. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
