What should I do if I find out I’m pregnant after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine?
If pregnancy is discovered after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine, the pregnancy may generally continue, but regular prenatal care must be maintained.
Most COVID-19 vaccines administered in China are inactivated virus vaccines, adenovirus vector vaccines, or recombinant subunit vaccines. These vaccines stimulate the body to produce antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, thereby providing some degree of protection against the virus. According to official COVID-19 vaccination guidelines, pregnancy plans should not be postponed solely due to vaccination. Therefore, under normal circumstances, receiving a COVID-19 vaccine does not affect a woman’s ability to conceive or her fertility. However, if pregnancy is confirmed after vaccination, timely prenatal evaluation at a healthcare facility is essential. If fetal development is confirmed to be normal, continuation of the pregnancy is generally recommended.
During pregnancy, expectant mothers are advised to adhere to routine prenatal care, especially by scheduling regular antenatal examinations according to gestational age to assess fetal development. Key tests include nuchal translucency (NT) screening, Down syndrome screening, and four-dimensional (4D) ultrasound.
