Can pancreatic islet function of 0.3 be restored?
Whether an islet function level of 0.3 can recover primarily depends on the underlying cause of impaired insulin secretion.
If the impairment results from autoimmune factors or certain idiopathic causes leading to permanent damage to pancreatic β-cells, islet function is typically difficult to restore. For example, in patients with type 1 diabetes, complete destruction of β-cells occurs due to such mechanisms, necessitating lifelong insulin replacement therapy.
However, if β-cell dysfunction is caused by glucotoxicity or lipotoxicity, partial recovery of islet function may occur once hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia are gradually corrected. In patients with type 2 diabetes—who often present with markedly elevated blood glucose levels—improvement in islet function following intensive treatment has been observed. Specifically, after intensive glycemic control and lipid management, some patients do experience a degree of functional recovery in their pancreatic islets.
