Introduction
Corticosteroids possess multiple functions, including anti-allergic effects, suppression of inflammatory responses, and regulation of metabolism. Corticosteroids refer to steroid hormones produced by the adrenal cortex, such as aldosterone, sex hormones, and glucocorticoids. Aldosterone helps maintain water and electrolyte balance, while glucocorticoids are commonly used to treat dermatological conditions such as eczema and exfoliative dermatitis.

Corticosteroids are a relatively common class of medications in today’s society; however, some individuals may not fully understand their specific functions and effects. What are corticosteroids?

Types of Corticosteroids

There are several types of corticosteroids, including mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids, and sex corticosteroids. Sex corticosteroids encompass androgens (e.g., testosterone) and estrogens/progestogens. Glucocorticoids regulate electrolyte balance and promote metabolism, among other physiological functions. Clinically, they are used to treat conditions such as vitiligo, bronchial asthma, systemic lupus erythematosus, and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. However, patients should take these medications only under the guidance of a physician to avoid placing undue strain on the body.

Corticosteroids possess multiple functions, including anti-allergic effects, suppression of inflammatory responses, and regulation of metabolism. They refer to steroid hormones secreted by the adrenal cortex—such as aldosterone, sex hormones, and glucocorticoids. Aldosterone helps maintain water and electrolyte balance; glucocorticoids are commonly used to treat dermatological conditions—including eczema and exfoliative dermatitis—as well as allergic disorders such as allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma. Additionally, they help control severe inflammatory “cytokine storms” associated with serious infections.

In daily life, it is important to strengthen the body’s resistance by engaging regularly in outdoor physical activity and maintaining healthy lifestyle habits. We hope this information has been helpful to you.
