Introduction
A common class of antiallergic medications—such as chlorpheniramine, loratadine, and cetirizine—is readily available over the counter at pharmacies. These drugs belong to the antihistamine class and are primarily used to treat conditions like urticaria and allergic rhinitis. They also provide some auxiliary antipruritic (itch-relieving) effects for patients with eczema; therefore, patients may take antiallergic medications as needed.

Allergic eczema is an inflammatory skin disorder; in severe cases, antiallergic medications may be prescribed. But can antiallergic drugs be taken when eczema is severe?

Can antiallergic drugs be taken for severe eczema?

A commonly used class of antiallergic medications—such as chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton), loratadine, and cetirizine—is readily available over the counter at pharmacies. These agents belong to the antihistamine class and are primarily indicated for conditions like urticaria and allergic rhinitis. Although not first-line treatments for eczema, they do provide adjunctive antipruritic (anti-itch) effects for eczema patients; therefore, their use is permissible.

The etiology and pathogenesis of eczema involve multiple internal and external factors and frequently occur in individuals with an atopic (allergic) predisposition. People with atopy tend to mount exaggerated allergic responses to various endogenous and exogenous allergens—including dietary proteins (especially fish, shrimp, eggs, and cow’s milk), chemical substances, plants, animal hides and feathers, intestinal parasites, and chronic infection foci. Even physical stimuli such as sunlight, heat, wind, or cold may trigger allergic reactions in susceptible individuals. Additionally, eczema development may be associated with neurologic dysfunction, endocrine imbalances, indigestion, gastrointestinal disorders, and metabolic abnormalities.

When the above symptoms appear, it is essential to actively identify and eliminate underlying causes and seek timely treatment to reduce recurrence. Furthermore, in daily life, patients should avoid spicy and irritating foods and abstain from smoking and alcohol consumption. We hope this article has been helpful to you.
