Why does eating pineapple cause itching in the mouth?
Itching of the mouth after eating pineapple may result from two primary causes: the presence of glycosides or the allergenic enzyme bromelain in pineapple. Additionally, oral itching after pineapple consumption may be associated with pre-existing oral inflammation. The specific mechanisms are as follows:
1. Glycosides in pineapple: These compounds exert an irritant effect on the oral mucosa and skin; thus, individuals commonly experience oral itching after consuming pineapple.
2. Bromelain—the allergenic component in pineapple: Individuals with heightened sensitivity may develop allergic reactions upon ingestion, manifesting as oral numbness, swelling, or pain.
3. Oral inflammation: Pre-existing oral inflammatory conditions can render the oral mucosa more susceptible to irritation from pineapple, potentially leading to pruritus and discomfort.
To prevent post-consumption lip bleeding or oral itching, it is advisable to pretreat pineapple before eating—for instance, soaking it briefly in a dilute saline solution. This process helps leach out glycosides, thereby reducing potential irritation to the oral tissues. Moreover, individuals with a known history of pineapple allergy should avoid consuming pineapple altogether.
