Introduction
1. Allergy: An allergic reaction triggered by foods or food additives—particularly animal proteins such as those found in fish and shrimp. 2. Infections caused by various pathogens can also induce urticaria; bacterial infections are the most common cause in children. 3. Insect bites: Urticaria following insect bites is relatively common in children. 4. Physical factors: Temperature-related stimuli—such as cold or heat—can also trigger urticaria.

Urticaria is generally classified into acute and chronic forms. Acute urticaria is typically easier to treat, and standard medications are usually effective. So, what causes urticaria in children?

What Causes Urticaria in Children?

Common etiologies of pediatric urticaria include the following:

  1. Allergic reactions: These may be triggered by foods or food additives—particularly animal proteins such as those found in fish and shellfish. Plant-based foods—including certain fruits and vegetables—as well as food flavorings and seasonings can also provoke allergic responses. Additionally, inhalant allergens—such as pollen, animal dander, or fungal spores—may induce urticaria.
  2. Infections: Various infectious agents can trigger urticaria. In children, bacterial infections are most common—for example, those associated with acute tonsillitis or pharyngitis. Viral and parasitic infections may also cause urticaria.
  3. Insect bites: Urticaria frequently develops following insect bites in children. Typically, an allergic reaction at the bite site is followed rapidly by the appearance of multiple wheals across the body.
  4. Physical factors: Temperature extremes (cold or heat) can also precipitate urticaria.

Clinical manifestations of urticaria in children vary: when caused by infection, fever may accompany the rash; otherwise, urticaria typically presents as widespread erythematous plaques and wheals over the body, accompanied by pruritus.

During treatment, it is essential to maintain healthy lifestyle habits and regular dietary patterns. Avoid known allergenic and “heat-inducing” foods. Refrain from scratching the skin. Incorporate vitamin C–rich foods into the diet. We hope this information is helpful. Wishing you good health and happiness!
