Introduction
There are numerous considerations for fathers-to-be during the preconception period. First and foremost, they must quit smoking and abstain from alcohol, as both tobacco and alcohol can reduce sperm count and impair sperm motility. It typically takes men about three months to generate new sperm. Fathers-to-be should also pay special attention to their dietary habits, consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables rich in dietary fiber and vitamins.

Many couples begin preparing for pregnancy shortly after marriage. During the preconception period, numerous factors require attention. So, what precautions should men take when preparing for conception?

Preconception Precautions for Men

Men must observe numerous precautions during the preconception period. First and foremost, they must quit smoking and abstain from alcohol entirely, as both tobacco and alcohol can reduce sperm count and impair sperm motility. Since it typically takes approximately three months for men to generate a new batch of sperm, lifestyle adjustments should begin well in advance. Men should also pay special attention to their dietary habits—opting for fiber-rich fruits and vegetables, as well as those high in vitamins. Adequate sleep duration and quality must be ensured, and maintaining a positive, relaxed mood is highly recommended. Additionally, men should strictly avoid exposure to environments with ionizing radiation or excessive heat, as such conditions may adversely affect sperm quality.

Couples are advised to undergo relevant medical examinations 3–6 months prior to attempting conception. A complete blood count (CBC) helps assess white blood cell count (to detect potential infections), hemoglobin levels (to screen for anemia), and platelet count (to identify possible hematologic or immune system disorders). If the mother has type O blood and the father has type A, B, or AB blood, there is an increased risk of hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) during pregnancy.

The above outlines key preconception considerations for men. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
