Introduction
Excessive foot sweating can be alleviated through the following measures: regularly washing feet with warm water helps remove dead skin cells, break down bacteria, and prevent bacterial growth. Wear cotton socks that absorb sweat and breathable shoes to minimize bacterial proliferation; also, reduce physical activity and walking when possible. If sweating is heavy, wash feet promptly. In cases of severe hyperhidrosis, pharmacological treatment may be required.

In daily life, some individuals suffer persistently from excessively sweaty feet—particularly during hot summer months—when foot perspiration increases significantly, leading to progressively worsening foot odor and considerable embarrassment. So, what can be done about sweaty feet?

What Can Be Done About Sweaty Feet?

Excessive foot sweating can be alleviated through the following measures: regularly washing feet with warm water helps remove dead skin cells (keratin), break down bacteria, and inhibit bacterial growth. Opt for socks made of pure cotton or other moisture-wicking materials, and wear well-ventilated footwear to minimize bacterial proliferation; reduce prolonged standing or walking when possible. If sweating is heavy, wash feet promptly. In cases of severe hyperhidrosis, pharmacological interventions may be employed to reduce sweat production and suppress bacterial growth, thereby eliminating odor. When odor is pronounced, medical consultation is recommended; oral medications such as Yupingfeng San (a traditional Chinese herbal formula) may be prescribed to astringe and inhibit sweating.

Some patients habitually wear athletic shoes or rubber boots that enclose the feet, causing sweat to accumulate inside the footwear. This prolonged moisture exposure can lead to eczematous skin lesions or fungal infections of the feet.

Sweaty feet represent a clinical condition known as plantar hyperhidrosis, commonly diagnosed as such in practice. Plantar hyperhidrosis typically results from overactivity of the eccrine sweat glands on the soles, which are under sympathetic nervous system control. Emotional triggers—including excitement, mental stress, fatigue, and anxiety—can stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, thereby intensifying eccrine gland activity and manifesting as excessive foot sweating.
