Introduction
Children can take Xiao Chai Hu Granules. Chai Hu is a traditional Chinese medicine preparation whose main ingredients include Bupleurum (Chai Hu), Scutellaria (Huang Qin), Pinellia (Jiang Ban Xia), Licorice (Gan Cao), and Ginger (Sheng Jiang). It helps clear heat and detoxify, relieve sore throat, exert antiviral effects, and reduce low-grade fever. If a high fever occurs, a complete blood count (CBC) should be performed to determine whether a bacterial or mycoplasma infection is present, followed by appropriate targeted treatment.

Children may take Xiao Chai Hu Granules. Chai Hu (Bupleurum) is a traditional Chinese patent medicine whose main ingredients include Bupleurum root, Scutellaria baicalensis, processed Pinellia tuber, licorice root, and fresh ginger. It possesses properties of clearing heat and detoxifying, relieving sore throat, exerting antiviral effects, and reducing low-grade fever. Since common colds and coughs in children are frequently caused by upper respiratory tract infections—and such infections are predominantly viral in origin—this preparation may be appropriate.

There are no specific antiviral drugs for most viral infections; instead, traditional Chinese patent medicines like Xiao Chai Hu Granules are commonly used. If a child exhibits symptoms consistent with viral upper respiratory tract infection, oral administration of Xiao Chai Hu Granules may be considered. Concurrently, physical cooling measures should be employed, such as warm-water bathing, soaking the feet in warm water, or wiping the neck, axillae, and groin areas—these methods can help reduce low-grade fever. In cases of high fever, a complete blood count (CBC) should be performed to assess for possible concurrent bacterial or Mycoplasma infection, followed by targeted treatment accordingly. However, this medication must only be administered under the guidance of a physician, with strict adherence to the prescribed dosage. During treatment, consumption of raw, cold, spicy, or “cold-natured” foods should be avoided.
