How to Quickly Relieve Severe Coughing in Children
Coughing in children is a common symptom encountered during growth and development. Specific management strategies are as follows:
① Drink plenty of warm water
Consuming warm beverages helps thin viscous mucus, alleviates tension in the respiratory mucosa, and facilitates expectoration. It is best to offer the child warm boiled water, warm milk, or rice gruel. Fresh fruit juice may also be given; however, only mild juices—such as apple or pear juice—should be selected. Citrus juices (e.g., orange or grapefruit juice) should be avoided due to their potential irritant effects.
② Steam inhalation therapy
For severe coughing, steam inhalation may be beneficial. Alternatively, hold the child in a steam-filled bathroom for approximately five minutes. The moist air helps loosen pulmonary mucus and soothe coughing.
③ Warm compress on the back
Fill a hot-water bottle with water at approximately 40°C, wrap it in a thin towel, and apply it to the child’s back over the lung area. This method accelerates the expulsion of cold pathogens and is particularly effective for relieving early-stage cough symptoms associated with the common cold.
④ Pharmacological treatment
Medications are generally reserved for cases where coughing significantly interferes with the child’s daily activities. For uncomplicated viral coughs, nebulized normal saline may suffice. In more severe cases, physicians may add appropriate medications to the nebulized solution based on clinical assessment.
