Introduction
Individuals with high blood glucose levels are advised to avoid congee, as it has a relatively high glycemic index. Consuming congee without portion control may cause a rapid postprandial rise in blood glucose levels, leading to significant glucose fluctuations. However, congee may be consumed if gastrointestinal disorders are present—such as poor appetite, anorexia, or viral influenza—accompanied by gastrointestinal symptoms.

A slightly viscous, thin liquid food—thinner and more watery than congee. Colloquially, it is simply “thinner than congee.” Another definition holds that porridge is cooked for a relatively short time, leaving rice grains largely intact and resulting in pronounced separation between the broth and rice. So, can individuals with high blood glucose consume porridge?

Can individuals with high blood glucose consume porridge?

Individuals with elevated blood glucose are generally advised to avoid porridge, as it has a relatively high glycemic index (GI). Consuming porridge without portion control may cause a rapid postprandial spike in blood glucose levels, leading to significant glycemic fluctuations. However, porridge may be appropriate for individuals experiencing certain gastrointestinal disorders—such as loss of appetite, poor digestion, or viral gastroenteritis—that produce gastrointestinal symptoms.

For patients with high blood glucose who do consume porridge, it is recommended to adopt a strategy of small, frequent meals to minimize glycemic fluctuations. Prolonged cooking of rice significantly increases sugar release, markedly elevating its glycemic index—and thereby adversely affecting individuals with hyperglycemia. Therefore, unless gastrointestinal symptoms or disorders are present, patients with high blood glucose are typically advised to prepare rice as dry, firm rice rather than porridge. Additionally, incorporating whole grains into rice dishes is encouraged.

Disadvantages of consuming porridge: While moderate porridge consumption can benefit health, porridge is a liquid food. Long-term exclusive reliance on porridge may lead to inadequate intake of nutrients and energy, potentially resulting in malnutrition. Moreover, porridge is rapidly digested and absorbed and possesses a high glycemic index—making it unsuitable for long-term consumption by individuals with persistently elevated blood glucose levels.
