Apples contain approximately 10% sugar by weight; thus, for patients whose blood glucose is well-controlled, consuming a small portion between meals is generally safe.

Individuals with high blood glucose should consume a certain amount of fruit daily. When selecting fruits, those with lower sugar content are preferable—common options include apples, pears, pomelos, strawberries, and cherries. If blood glucose levels are markedly elevated or poorly controlled, patients may opt for low-sugar alternatives such as cucumber (fruit type) or cherry tomatoes until glucose levels stabilize, after which other fruits may be gradually reintroduced.
