Introduction
Patients with high blood sugar and those with diabetes may consume dried tofu skin (fu pi) in moderation. Most dried tofu skin is made from soybeans, which contain approximately 36 g of protein, 13% fat, and 25% carbohydrates per 100 g, and are relatively rich in calcium. Since dried tofu skin derived from soybeans is high in protein, patients who consume large amounts should reduce their intake of meat accordingly.

Individuals with elevated blood glucose levels constitute a special population in our daily lives, and dietary considerations are particularly important for them. Persistently high blood glucose can lead to diabetes; therefore, individuals with hyperglycemia must pay close attention to dietary management. So, can people with high blood glucose consume tofu skin?

Can people with high blood glucose consume tofu skin?

Individuals with hyperglycemia or diabetes may consume tofu skin in moderation. Most tofu skin is made from soybeans, which contain approximately 36 g of protein, 13% fat, and 25% carbohydrates per 100 g, along with relatively high calcium content. As tofu skin is rich in plant-based protein, patients who consume substantial amounts should correspondingly reduce their intake of meat to maintain appropriate overall protein intake.

For individuals with diabetes, protein-derived calories should ideally account for 20–25% of total daily caloric intake. However, patients with diabetic nephropathy—especially those presenting with dyslipidemia or requiring dialysis—should avoid soy-based tofu skin. Instead, they should prioritize high-quality animal proteins obtained from sources such as red meat, lamb, beef, chicken, fish, and eggs. In contrast, tofu provides plant-based protein, which is less biologically complete than animal-derived protein and thus less suitable for patients with compromised kidney function.

Patients should adopt a pattern of eating smaller, more frequent meals and avoid overeating or binge eating. Regular, moderate physical activity is also recommended, as it helps lower blood glucose levels and enhances immune function. We hope this information is helpful. Wishing you good health and a joyful life!
