Is nephrectomy required for benign kidney tumors?

Introduction
Whether a benign renal tumor requires nephrectomy depends on the tumor’s size and location, as well as the presence of secondary symptoms. Most benign renal tumors are angiomyolipomas; if such a tumor exceeds 7 cm—or even 10 cm—in diameter and exhibits intratumoral hemorrhage or rupture, it may cause secondary bleeding, necessitating surgical intervention. In some cases, radical nephrectomy may be required.

All types of tumors can adversely affect human health, and surgical removal is commonly chosen as a treatment. However, some patients are uncertain whether a benign kidney tumor necessitates nephrectomy (removal of the kidney). Do benign kidney tumors require kidney removal?

Do benign kidney tumors require kidney removal?

Whether a benign kidney tumor warrants kidney removal depends on the tumor’s size and location, as well as the presence of secondary symptoms. Most benign kidney tumors are renal angiomyolipomas. If such a tumor exceeds 7 cm—or even 10 cm—in diameter and exhibits internal hemorrhage or rupture, it may cause secondary bleeding, necessitating surgical intervention. In severe cases, radical nephrectomy—complete removal of both the tumor and the affected kidney—may be required to prevent life-threatening complications and safeguard long-term health. Conversely, small benign kidney tumors (< 4 cm) that produce no symptoms generally do not require surgical intervention.

Benign kidney tumors are typically asymptomatic. The most common type is renal angiomyolipoma, which grows slowly over time. These tumors are often discovered incidentally during routine physical examinations. Occasionally, when the tumor reaches 8–10 cm in size, it may cause mild stretching or compression of adjacent structures, leading to subtle low-back discomfort or dull pain. In some cases, compression of the renal pelvis may result in hydronephrosis or urinary tract infection.

Patients diagnosed with a benign kidney tumor should promptly seek medical evaluation to prevent disease progression. In daily life, adequate rest and avoidance of excessive physical strain are recommended. We hope this information has been helpful!
