In daily life, some individuals experience nasal dryness, causing significant discomfort. What are the effects, indications, and precautions associated with menthol nasal drops?

Effects, Indications, and Precautions of Menthol Nasal Drops

Compound menthol nasal drops are an oily nasal preparation clinically used to moisturize the nasal cavity and protect the nasal mucosa. They are indicated for conditions such as nasal septal erosion, rhinitis, and sinusitis, as well as following nasal septum or sinus surgery. In patients with atrophic rhinitis, long-term use of compound menthol nasal drops may stimulate regeneration of nasal mucosal cells.

The primary clinical ingredient of compound menthol nasal drops is liquid paraffin oil. The formulation also contains equal masses of menthol and camphor. As its solvent, liquid paraffin oil provides lubrication to the nasal cavity. This medication has broad clinical applications and is intended for topical (nasal) use only. A small number of patients may experience mild allergic reactions after administration; however, such reactions are rare.

Compound menthol nasal drops belong to the class of vasoconstrictors and should not be used long-term, as this may lead to adverse effects. First, prolonged use may cause drug-induced rhinitis: chronic vasoconstriction in the nasal cavity can induce hyperplastic changes in local nasal mucosal tissue, resulting in drug-induced rhinitis. Second, extended use may cause systemic symptoms such as dizziness and headache. We hope this information proves helpful!
