Introduction
Melasma is a pigmentary disorder affecting the facial skin, primarily caused by endocrine imbalances in women, significant psychological stress, various systemic diseases, vitamin deficiencies, and topical chemical drug irritation. Additionally, natural aging and certain chronic conditions—such as liver disease and malignancies—are also major contributing factors. Among these, metabolic dysfunction leading to accumulation of metabolic “waste” is considered the primary underlying cause.

Melasma appearing at the outer corners of the eyes is a common acquired hyperpigmentary skin disorder affecting the face. It typically results from excessive melanin deposition triggered by endocrine imbalances within the body. So, what causes melasma at the outer canthus to become increasingly prominent?

What Causes Melasma at the Outer Canthus to Become Progressively More Noticeable?

Melasma is a facial pigmentary disorder primarily associated with female endocrine dysfunction, high levels of psychological stress, underlying systemic diseases, deficiencies in vitamins (especially vitamin C), and topical exposure to chemical agents or medications. Additionally, natural aging and certain chronic conditions—such as hepatic disease or malignancies—are also major contributing factors. Among these, metabolic dysregulation leading to accumulation of metabolic “waste products” is considered the principal underlying cause. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), melasma is often treated with herbal formulas that soothe and clear liver heat, nourish yin, and tonify the kidneys. TCM represents one of the great achievements of Chinese civilization.

It is advisable to moderately increase intake of fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C. Avoid excessive sun exposure and minimize use of cosmetics. Topical application of herbal lightening creams—such as Caomu Spot-Lightening Cream—may enhance depigmentation efficacy. Black fungus (Auricularia auricula-judae) also supports spleen function and moisturizes the skin, helping prevent skin aging and aiding in melasma reduction. Preparation method: Use 30 jujubes (red dates) and 30 g of black fungus. Remove the pits from the jujubes and rinse the black fungus thoroughly. Add both ingredients to a pot with an appropriate amount of cold water and simmer for one hour. Consume this decoction twice daily—once in the morning and once in the evening. Regular consumption helps maintain youthful skin, fade melasma, improve muscle tone and complexion, and treat facial melasma accompanied by weight loss or emaciation. According to the Compendium of Materia Medica (Bencao Gangmu), black fungus is specifically noted for its ability to eliminate melasma on the face.

Melasma is generally harmless to overall health; it mainly affects appearance. If treatment is desired, consult a reputable hospital rather than seeking care at unregulated beauty salons. We hope this information proves helpful. Wishing you good health and happiness!
