Introduction
Its primary action is to enhance the Qi’s consolidating and retaining function, making it effective for treating spontaneous sweating (i.e., sweating with minimal exertion), shortness of breath, reluctance to speak, fatigue, and general lassitude. If the defensive function of Qi is impaired—manifesting as frequent colds or compromised immunity—Yu Ping Feng San may also offer therapeutic benefits. The principal ingredients of Yu Ping Feng San are Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia root), Huang Qi (Astragalus root), and Bai Zhu (Atractylodes rhizome). Fang Feng helps dispel dampness and fortifies the exterior.

Yu Ping Feng Granules consist of Saposhnikovia root (Fang Feng), Astragalus root (Huang Qi), and Atractylodes rhizome (Bai Zhu). Their primary therapeutic actions are to tonify Qi, consolidate the exterior, and arrest spontaneous sweating. Clinically, they are used for patients with deficient defensive Qi and an unstable exterior—manifesting as spontaneous sweating, pallor, general physical debility, and susceptibility to wind-cold invasion. So, can Yu Ping Feng Granules cause “internal heat” (a traditional Chinese medicine concept referring to excessive heat symptoms)?

Can Yu Ping Feng Granules Cause “Internal Heat”?

Taking Yu Ping Feng Granules in excessive amounts or over a prolonged period may lead to symptoms of “internal heat.”

The formula primarily enhances the Qi’s consolidating and restraining function. It is clinically effective for spontaneous sweating—characterized by sweating upon minimal exertion—as well as shortness of breath, fatigue, lethargy, and generalized weakness. When defensive Qi is weakened, resulting in frequent colds or compromised immunity, Yu Ping Feng Granules may also provide therapeutic benefit. The principal ingredients are Saposhnikovia root (Fang Feng), Astragalus root (Huang Qi), and Atractylodes rhizome (Bai Zhu). Fang Feng dispels dampness and consolidates the exterior.

Huang Qi tonifies Qi, consolidates the exterior, expels toxins, drains pus, promotes diuresis, and supports tissue regeneration. Prepared Bai Zhu strengthens the Spleen, tonifies Qi, and dispels dampness. Combined, these herbs tonify Qi, reinforce the fundamental constitution, and resolve dampness. However, this combination exhibits relatively warm and drying properties; thus, for individuals with pre-existing excess heat, prolonged use of Yu Ping Feng Granules may provoke symptoms of “internal heat,” such as dry mouth and throat, sore throat, and constipation. If any of these symptoms occur during treatment, discontinue the medication promptly and consult a qualified practitioner for adjustment.

Patients are advised to take the granules in moderation. We hope this article has been helpful to you!
