Introduction
Nail polish contains certain toxic substances, and prolonged use may lead to chronic poisoning. From the perspective of its ingredients, nail polish typically contains three components that can adversely affect health. After applying nail polish, nail polish remover is inevitably used; ingredients commonly found in removers—such as acetone, butyl acetate, and isopropyl acetate—can cause dizziness and vertigo, and may also irritate the eyes and skin.

In daily life, some people enjoy applying water-based nail polish to enhance their personal appearance and charm. However, they may be uncertain whether frequent use poses health risks. So, how harmful is water-based nail polish?

How Harmful Is Water-Based Nail Polish?

Nail polish contains certain toxic components, and prolonged or repeated use may lead to chronic poisoning. From a compositional perspective, conventional nail polish typically contains three ingredients known to adversely affect health. First is toluene, which ensures smooth application and even color distribution. However, inhalation of high concentrations of toluene can cause dizziness, nausea, and may adversely affect fetal development.

Second is formaldehyde—a well-known carcinogen. Third is dibutyl phthalate (DBP), which is primarily used to prevent chipping and peeling of the polish. Inhalation of DBP may impair fertility and potentially increase cancer risk. However, many modern nail polish formulations have been reformulated—numerous brands now exclude these three hazardous substances, as well as formaldehyde and common allergens, and may instead contain safer alternatives such as camphor.

Nonetheless, after applying nail polish, removal inevitably requires nail polish remover—commonly containing acetone, butyl acetate, or acetyl propionate. These solvents may induce dizziness and vertigo, and can irritate the eyes and skin. Moreover, repeated nail polish removal may damage the nail plate. We hope this information proves helpful!
