Medications that enhance immunity
Immunity plays a vital role in maintaining human health. There are many ways to boost immunity—some people enhance it through exercise and dietary adjustments, while others rely on medications. So, what medications can help strengthen the immune system?
Medications That Enhance Immunity
Immune-enhancing medications include both traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) and Western pharmaceuticals. TCMs commonly used for this purpose primarily focus on tonifying Qi (vital energy), nourishing blood, enriching Yin, or warming Yang. Examples include wild ginseng, Codonopsis root (Dang Shen), Pseudostellaria root (Tai Zi Shen), Astragalus root (Huang Qi), Atractylodes rhizome (Bai Zhu), velvet antler (Lu Rong), and Rhodiola rosea (Hong Jing Tian)—all of which have demonstrated efficacy in boosting immunity. Other TCM preparations such as Bai Ling Capsules and Jin Shui Bao Capsules also possess immunomodulatory properties. Additionally, Western options—including pidotimod oral solution, immunoglobulin, gamma globulin, and compound trace element supplements—can effectively support immune function.

Gamma Globulin (also known as Human Immunoglobulin): Administration of this product constitutes passive immunotherapy. By directly injecting large quantities of antibodies into the recipient, gamma globulin enables immediate antigen–antibody neutralization reactions against toxins, bacteria, and viruses—thereby rapidly shifting patients from a state of low or absent immunity to a temporary state of immunity. Immunostimulants: These agents are highly diverse and act by activating one or more types of immune effector cells, thereby enhancing nonspecific immune responses. Examples include thymosin, transfer factor, interferon, and lentinan (a polysaccharide derived from shiitake mushrooms).

Thymosin is currently the most widely used immunomodulator. It regulates and enhances cellular immunity by promoting the maturation of T lymphocytes. It has shown therapeutic benefits in various immune-deficiency disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, bronchial asthma, psoriasis, and refractory pulmonary tuberculosis.
