N95 respirators are one of the nine types of particulate-filtering respirators certified by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), while KN95 respirators are one of the nine types of particulate-filtering respirators compliant with China’s national standards. The technical requirements—including filtration efficiency for non-oily particles—and test methods specified in the N95 and KN95 standards are essentially identical, resulting in comparable protective performance; the two standards simply belong to different national regulatory frameworks.

Numerous types of masks are currently available on the market—such as the KN95 and N95 masks frequently mentioned lately. Many people are unclear whether these two are identical. Below, we provide a detailed comparison of KN95 and N95 masks.

Differences Between KN95 and N95 Masks

The N95 mask is one of nine particulate-filtering respirator types certified by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The “N” designation indicates that the mask is suitable for filtering non-oil-based particles, while “95” refers to its filtration efficiency—specifically, an N95 mask filters at least 95% of airborne non-oil-based particles.

The KN95 mask complies with China’s national standard for non-oil-based particle filtration efficiency (≥95%). A KN95-rated mask achieves ≥95% filtration efficiency against non-oil-based particles larger than 0.075 micrometers in diameter. It helps prevent droplet transmission caused by splashes of patient bodily fluids or blood and effectively filters viruses and dust particles. Since most viruses measure approximately 0.1 micrometers in diameter—and dust particles are even larger—KN95 masks offer robust protection.

The technical requirements and test methods for non-oil-based particle filtration efficiency under both the N95 and KN95 standards are essentially identical, resulting in comparable protective performance. The only distinction lies in their respective national regulatory frameworks.

How to Dispose of Used Masks

1. Masks Worn by Healthy Individuals

Masks worn by healthy individuals pose no risk of transmitting the novel coronavirus. They should be replaced when deformed, damp, or soiled—conditions that compromise protective efficacy. Used masks from healthy individuals may be disposed of according to standard household waste classification guidelines.

2. Masks Worn by Suspected or Confirmed Cases

Masks used by suspected or confirmed patients must not be discarded casually. They should be treated as medical waste and handled strictly in accordance with medical waste management protocols. Such masks must never re-enter general circulation.

3. Masks Used by Hospital Visitors or Healthcare Workers

All masks used within healthcare facilities should be placed directly into yellow medical waste bags for centralized disposal. However, it is not recommended that members of the general public deliver used masks to hospitals, as this could increase infection risks.
