Introduction
Differences between KF94 and N95: The two standards originate from different regulatory bodies—N95 standards are set by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), while KF94 standards are established by Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS). In terms of particulate filtration efficiency, N95 respirators offer superior performance (both in particle size captured and filtration efficiency) compared to KF94. However, KF94 includes specific requirements for filtering oil-based particles—a feature not mandated for N95 respirators.

Numerous types of masks are available on the market. Recently, KF94 and N95 masks have been frequently mentioned, yet many people remain unclear whether these two are identical. Below, we provide a detailed comparison of KF94 and N95 masks.

Differences Between KF94 and N95 Masks

1. KF94

KF94 is a Korean standard. KF94 masks filter over 94% of particles with an average diameter of 0.4 μm—performance nearly equivalent to that of U.S.-standard N95 masks. Notably, KF94 masks impose an additional requirement for filtering oil-based particles, which N95 masks do not.

2. N95

N95 is a U.S. standard. N95 masks represent one of nine particulate-filtering respirator types certified by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The “N” designation indicates suitability for filtering non-oil-based particles only, while “95” denotes the filtration efficiency level—i.e., ≥95% filtration efficiency against non-oil-based particles.

The standards differ: U.S. data originate from NIOSH, whereas Korean data derive from Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. Overall, N95 masks demonstrate superior particulate filtration performance (both in terms of particle size cutoff and filtration efficiency) compared to KF94 masks. However, KF94 masks include specific requirements for oil-based particle filtration, which N95 masks lack. Additionally, both KF94 and N95 masks are non-medical-grade; thus, their bacterial filtration efficiency and resistance to splashes are inferior to those of dedicated medical-grade masks.

How to Dispose of Used Masks

1. Masks Worn by Healthy Individuals

Masks worn by healthy individuals pose no risk of transmitting the novel coronavirus. They should be replaced when deformed, dampened, or soiled—conditions that compromise protective efficacy. Used masks from healthy individuals may be disposed of according to standard household waste classification guidelines.

2. Masks Worn by Suspected or Confirmed Cases

Masks worn by suspected or confirmed patients must not be discarded casually. They should be treated as medical waste and handled strictly in accordance with medical waste management protocols; they must not re-enter general circulation or disposal channels.

3. Masks Used by Hospital Visitors or Healthcare Workers

Within healthcare facilities, all used masks—including those worn by healthcare personnel, patients, their family members, or visitors—must be placed directly into yellow medical waste bags for centralized disposal. It is not recommended for the general public to deliver used masks to hospitals, as this could increase infection risks.
