Introduction
At 24 weeks’ gestation, the normal amniotic fluid depth is 3–8 cm; values greater than 8 cm indicate polyhydramnios, while values less than 3 cm indicate oligohydramnios. Amniotic fluid depth refers to the vertical depth of the largest amniotic fluid pocket measured by color Doppler ultrasound and serves as one indicator for assessing fetal development. Oligohydramnios may lead to fetal hypoxia and asphyxia, whereas polyhydramnios is often associated with fetal developmental abnormalities and fetal distress.

Amniotic fluid is the liquid contained within the amniotic cavity of a pregnant woman’s uterus. Its primary function is to sustain fetal life throughout pregnancy. Amniotic fluid consists of approximately 98% water and 2% inorganic salts and organic substances. During pregnancy, amniotic fluid protects the fetus and also helps alleviate maternal discomfort caused by fetal movement. So, what is the normal range for amniotic fluid depth at 24 weeks?

Normal Amniotic Fluid Depth at 24 Weeks

The standard amniotic fluid depth at 24 weeks is 3–8 cm. A measurement greater than 8 cm indicates polyhydramnios (excessive amniotic fluid), while a value less than 3 cm indicates oligohydramnios (insufficient amniotic fluid). Amniotic fluid depth refers to the vertical depth of the largest amniotic fluid pocket measured via color Doppler ultrasound and serves as one indicator for assessing fetal development. Both polyhydramnios and oligohydramnios can adversely affect the fetus. Oligohydramnios may lead to fetal hypoxia and asphyxia, whereas polyhydramnios is often associated with fetal developmental abnormalities, umbilical cord prolapse, and fetal distress.

Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) Method: The maternal abdomen is divided into four quadrants using the umbilicus as the central reference point. The deepest vertical measurements of amniotic fluid in each quadrant are summed to yield the AFI. The normal AFI range is 5–25 cm. An AFI greater than 25 cm is diagnostic of polyhydramnios, while an AFI less than 5 cm indicates oligohydramnios. Maximum Vertical Pocket (MVP): This method assesses the greatest depth of the amniotic fluid pocket within a single quadrant; the normal range is 2–8 cm.
