Introduction
Gout patients can consume sugarcane, but should monitor their intake. Sugarcane is a low-purine food and thus suitable for gout patients. However, it contains relatively high amounts of sugar. Gout patients often have coexisting metabolic disorders—such as hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and obesity—and excessive sugar intake may hinder the management of these conditions, thereby exacerbating gout.

Sugarcane is rich in water, carbohydrates, vitamins, and other nutrients, yet contains very low levels of purines. So, can individuals with gout consume sugarcane?

Can individuals with gout eat sugarcane?

Individuals with gout are generally advised against consuming sugarcane—especially during acute gout flares. Elevated serum uric acid levels form the underlying basis of gout. Factors contributing to hyperuricemia include consumption of rich broths (e.g., bone broth), organ meats (e.g., pork liver), alcohol, and fruit-based beverages high in fructose (e.g., orange juice with pulp). Although sugarcane is highly nutritious and contains abundant water, it is also exceptionally rich in sugars—primarily fructose and glucose. Research indicates that fructose intake increases endogenous uric acid production; therefore, individuals with gout should avoid sugarcane.

Excessive consumption may trigger oral ulcers and promote weight gain due to sugar accumulation. Gout is a metabolic disorder caused by abnormal purine metabolism, leading to hyperuricemia and subsequent deposition of urate crystals. Dietary management should emphasize low-purine, light foods; high-purine foods—including seafood and organ meats—must be avoided. Patients should drink ample water to enhance uric acid excretion, abstain from smoking and alcohol, follow physician-guided pharmacotherapy during acute episodes, rest in bed, and elevate the affected limb appropriately to improve circulation and reduce urate deposition.

To prevent and manage gout, patients should prioritize increased fluid intake while minimizing consumption of broths and soups. We hope this information is helpful. Wishing you good health and happiness!
