Efficacy and Effects of Xiao’er Yanbian Granules
Xiao’er Yanbian Granules is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) preparation classified as a heat-clearing agent, with functions of clearing heat, relieving sore throat, detoxifying, and alleviating pain.
This medication is indicated for pediatric “Houbi” (sore throat) and “Ru’e” (tonsillitis) caused by excessive lung-wei heat, manifesting as sore and swollen throat, cough with copious phlegm, and oral or lingual ulceration. It is also applicable to patients with acute pharyngitis or acute tonsillitis presenting with the above-mentioned TCM patterns.
The primary ingredients include Honeysuckle Flower (Jinyinhua), Fibraurea recisa Rhizome (Jinguolan), Platycodon Root (Jiegeng), Scrophularia Root (Xuanshen), Ophiopogon Tuber (Maizhong), Artificial Calculus Bovis (Ren Gong Niu Huang), and Bornel (Bingpian). Its principal therapeutic effects are clearing heat, relieving sore throat, detoxifying, and alleviating pain. Clinically, it is mainly used for throat pain, cough, excessive phlegm, and oral/lingual ulceration resulting from pediatric lung-heat syndrome. In Western medicine, it may be employed in the treatment of acute pharyngitis and acute tonsillitis.

Among the key components, Honeysuckle Flower, Fibraurea recisa Rhizome, Artificial Calculus Bovis, and Bornel possess wind-dispersing, heat-clearing, detoxifying, and blood-cooling properties, serving as the principal therapeutic agents. Platycodon Root and Ophiopogon Tuber primarily moisten the lungs, resolve phlegm, and suppress cough, while Scrophularia Root clears heat, nourishes yin, and promotes blood circulation to resolve stasis.
Special note: This product is not recommended for children with diabetes mellitus. It is also contraindicated in cases of acute laryngitis; affected children should seek prompt medical evaluation at a hospital.
