Introduction
Chinese plum (Prunus mume) is a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herb with a sour and astringent taste and a neutral nature. It functions to generate body fluids and consolidate lung qi, thereby alleviating coughs associated with pharyngitis and serving as an adjunctive therapy for pharyngeal disorders. Its ability to promote salivation and relieve thirst is relatively strong; however, it cannot cure pharyngitis. Patients with pharyngitis should still seek medical care at a hospital and undergo treatment under the guidance of a physician—for example, using TCM formulas that dispel wind, clear heat, reduce swelling, alleviate pain, and soothe the throat.

Wumei (Chinese plum) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. It is the dried, nearly ripe fruit of *Prunus mume*, a plant belonging to the Rosaceae family. Widely cultivated across China—especially in provinces south of the Yangtze River—it functions to astringe the lungs, consolidate the intestines, generate body fluids, and promote urination.

Can Wumei treat pharyngitis?

Wumei is a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine with a sour and astringent taste and a neutral nature. It nourishes body fluids and astringes lung qi, thereby helping to alleviate symptoms of pharyngitis and cough, and serving as an adjunctive therapy for throat disorders. While it effectively stimulates salivation and relieves thirst, Wumei alone cannot cure pharyngitis. Patients with pharyngitis should still seek medical evaluation and treatment at a hospital under professional guidance. For instance, herbal formulas that dispel wind, clear heat, reduce swelling, relieve pain, and soothe the throat—such as Jiegeng Gancao Tang (Platycodon and Licorice Decoction) or Er Ding Granules—may be prescribed. Alternatively, gargling with normal saline or compound borax solution, along with penicillin therapy to control inflammation, may be recommended.

In cases of allergic pharyngitis, antihistamines are indicated, and intramuscular dexamethasone may be administered to alleviate allergic symptoms. If severe allergic reactions occur—particularly those triggering respiratory distress—tracheostomy may be necessary to ensure airway patency. Additionally, for chronic pharyngitis resulting from lung deficiency—manifesting as persistent dry cough with scant sputum or non-productive cough—Wumei may be used under physician supervision to relieve associated symptoms such as dryness and burning sensation in the throat and mouth.

During treatment, patients should follow a light, easily digestible diet and avoid raw, cold, spicy, or irritating foods to minimize pharyngeal irritation. They should also refrain from shouting or vigorous coughing, ensure adequate sleep, and engage in appropriate physical exercise to support recovery. We hope this information proves helpful!
