Introduction
Patients with acute pharyngitis should avoid spicy foods, such as chili peppers, black pepper, curry, coffee, and all types of fried or grilled foods. These foods can irritate the local mucosa, causing throat discomfort and exacerbating pharyngitis symptoms. Heat-inducing “warming” foods—such as onions, dog meat, mutton, longan, and lychee—promote internal heat and dryness, deplete body fluids, cause dryness of the throat, and hinder recovery from pharyngitis.

In daily life, various illnesses—such as acute pharyngitis—can easily develop due to minor lapses in attention or poor lifestyle habits. So, what foods should be avoided with acute pharyngitis?

Foods to Avoid with Acute Pharyngitis

Patients with acute pharyngitis should avoid spicy foods—including chili peppers, black pepper, curry, coffee, and deep-fried or grilled foods—as these can irritate the local mucosa, exacerbate throat discomfort, and worsen pharyngitis symptoms. Heat-inducing “warming” foods—such as onions, dog meat, mutton, longan, and lychee—also promote internal heat and dryness, deplete body fluids, cause throat dryness, and impede recovery from pharyngitis. Fruits with warming properties—including longan, lychee, and tangerines—are likewise unsuitable for individuals with sore throats. Additionally, cold and greasy foods—such as ice cream, chilled beverages, and fatty meats—hinder recovery from pharyngitis.

Acute pharyngitis is an acute inflammatory condition affecting the pharyngeal mucosa, submucosal tissues, and lymphoid tissue. There are no specific antiviral drugs for this condition; treatment is primarily symptomatic. Patients should rest adequately, avoid smoking, drink plenty of water, and ensure good indoor air circulation. Gargling with warm saline solution is also recommended. If severe throat pain or high fever occurs, antipyretic and analgesic medications may be used effectively for symptom relief.

Regular physical exercise and improved physical fitness are essential. Maintaining regular, nutritious meals helps prevent common colds—and thereby prevents acute pharyngitis. Avoiding cold exposure and excessive fatigue in daily life is equally important. We hope this information proves helpful!
