What Causes a Burning Sensation in the Soles of the Feet?
Possible causes of sole heat sensation include:
1. Heat sensation in the soles commonly occurs in cases of blood deficiency with yin deficiency or internal heat due to yin deficiency. Typical symptoms include irritability, night sweats, flushed cheeks, “five-center heat” (heat sensation in both palms, both soles, and the chest), and warmth or heat in the hands and feet—including the soles.
2. Some individuals experience sole heat due to unhygienic or excessive eating habits, irregular meal timing, or frequent snacking. Over time, this weakens spleen and stomach function, leading to stagnation and heat accumulation manifesting as sole heat.
3. Certain diseases—such as dysentery, parasitic infections, or chronic malnutrition—may cause “ganji fever” (a TCM term referring to heat arising from accumulated deficiency and stagnation).
4. In daily work and life, trauma to the sole—followed by secondary infection—or chronic overuse resulting in sterile inflammation can elevate local skin temperature, thereby producing a sensation of sole heat.
Therefore, unexplained sole heat warrants timely medical evaluation and treatment.
During treatment, maintain local dryness and hygiene. Soaking the feet in warm water may be beneficial. Choose breathable, soft socks and wear loose-fitting, comfortable shoes. Diet should be varied to ensure adequate daily nutrition, while remaining light and bland—avoiding greasy and spicy foods.
