Is mifepristone tablet an emergency contraceptive?
Mifepristone tablets are a commonly used medication among women in daily life. Some people refer to mifepristone tablets as emergency contraceptives. So, is mifepristone truly an emergency contraceptive?
Is Mifepristone an Emergency Contraceptive?
Mifepristone is not an emergency contraceptive; rather, it is an abortifacient (a drug used to induce abortion). When taken after pregnancy has been established, it causes expulsion of the embryo or fetus. Its mechanism of action involves blocking the activity of progesterone—the hormone essential for maintaining pregnancy. As a result, progesterone activity in the woman’s body declines, leading to necrosis of the decidua (the specialized endometrial tissue supporting pregnancy), uterine contractions, cervical softening, and subsequent expulsion of the embryo. In contrast, emergency contraceptives typically contain high doses of progestin—most commonly levonorgestrel, available under numerous brand names, with “Yuejing” being one representative example. These two classes of drugs are fundamentally different; therefore, they must never be confused or used interchangeably.

After taking emergency contraceptives orally, many women experience mild nausea and vomiting. If symptoms are mild, no specific treatment is required; increasing fluid intake helps accelerate drug metabolism. Nausea and vomiting usually subside once the drug has been fully metabolized. However, if symptoms are severe, prompt medical evaluation and symptomatic treatment are necessary. Women with regular menstrual cycles who do not currently plan pregnancy may use emergency contraceptives for occasional contraception—but frequent use is strongly discouraged. Likewise, using oral short-term contraceptives solely to prevent unintended pregnancy is inappropriate and potentially harmful to health. Similarly, repeated use of emergency contraceptives is also detrimental to health and should be avoided.

Women should prioritize enhancing their immune function and overall resilience by adopting healthy lifestyle habits to avoid harm to their bodies. We hope this information is helpful. Wishing you good health and happiness!
