Introduction
Patients with nephritis can share a room. As the disease progresses, nephritis may affect sexual function—potentially leading to decreased libido. Some male patients may experience sexual dysfunction due to erectile dysfunction or the chronic disease state associated with chronic nephritis. If no sexual dysfunction is present, patients may engage in normal sexual activity and, for men, marry and have children. “Nephritis” is a general term.

Since nephritis is an inflammatory condition affecting both kidneys, it can significantly impact daily life and overall health. So, can individuals with nephritis engage in sexual activity?

Can individuals with nephritis engage in sexual activity?

Individuals with nephritis may maintain sexual activity. However, as the disease progresses, it may impair physiological function—potentially leading to decreased libido. Some male patients may experience erectile dysfunction or other sexual dysfunction due to the chronic illness state associated with chronic nephritis. In the absence of sexual dysfunction, patients may engage in normal sexual activity; men may marry and father children. For women, pregnancy increases renal workload and is therefore not recommended for those with unstable disease, as it may precipitate renal failure. Women with stable chronic nephritis may become pregnant, but only under the close supervision and guidance of a specialist nephrologist.

“Nephritis” is a general term. Common clinical diagnoses under this umbrella include pyelonephritis and glomerulonephritis; unless otherwise specified, the term “nephritis” herein refers specifically to glomerulonephritis. In its early stages, glomerulonephritis may manifest as mild edema involving the face, eyelids, or lower extremities—or it may be entirely asymptomatic. Routine physical examinations often reveal abnormalities on urinalysis; some patients may also exhibit mild hypertension. Given the insidious onset of glomerulonephritis, regular health check-ups are essential for early detection and timely intervention.

Patients should focus on cultivating healthy lifestyle habits and maintaining regular sleep-wake cycles, ensuring adequate and balanced nutritional intake to bolster their body’s resistance and immune function. We hope this information is helpful. Wishing you good health and happiness!
