What Causes Excessive Yellow Eye Discharge in Newborns?

Introduction
Yellow eye discharge in a baby may result from irritation caused by the baby’s eyelashes. During the early newborn period, eyelashes often grow inward (a condition known as trichiasis), which can irritate the eyeball and lead to eye discharge. Other possible causes include conjunctivitis or neonatal dacryocystitis. Additionally, eye discharge may stem from keratitis triggered by internal “heat” (a traditional Chinese medicine concept referring to inflammatory or hyperactive conditions) within the infant’s body.

Yellow eye discharge (crusts) in babies can arise from several causes. First, it may result from irritation caused by the baby’s eyelashes. During the early neonatal period, a baby’s eyelashes often grow inward, rubbing against the eyeball and thereby stimulating increased eye discharge. This condition is generally harmless and requires no special concern. Typically, by age one, the eyelashes begin growing outward, and the occurrence of eye discharge gradually diminishes. When present, simple gentle cleansing with a warm, damp cloth is usually sufficient.

Secondly, excessive yellow eye discharge may indicate an underlying medical condition—such as conjunctivitis or neonatal dacryocystitis—or possibly keratitis secondary to internal “heat” (a traditional Chinese medicine concept referring to systemic inflammation or hyperactivity). In such cases, maintaining good ocular hygiene—e.g., gently cleaning the eyes—and ensuring adequate indoor ventilation may help alleviate symptoms. Lastly, excessive eye discharge may reflect “internal heat accumulation” in the infant’s body—a TCM term describing a state of excessive internal heat or inflammation. Signs of internal heat include constipation and thickened tongue coating. When infants exhibit heightened “fire” (i.e., excess heat), eye discharge may increase. Therefore, parents are advised to encourage increased fluid intake and offer foods that clear heat and moisten the intestines.
