Introduction
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) M5 is a relatively severe subtype of leukemia and also one of the more common types of acute leukemia. Common symptoms include anemia, bleeding, infection, and fever. Additionally, patients may present with gingival hyperplasia and swelling. The primary treatment is systemic chemotherapy; standard chemotherapy regimens often achieve complete remission.

Recently, I have frequently experienced nosebleeds and felt unusually fatigued, prompting me to seek medical evaluation at a hospital. The doctor diagnosed me with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) subtype M5. I would like to know how serious this condition is—so, is AML-M5 severe?

Is AML-M5 severe?

AML-M5 is a relatively severe form of leukemia and one of the more common subtypes of acute myeloid leukemia. Typical symptoms include anemia, bleeding tendencies, infections, and fever. Additionally, patients may experience gingival hyperplasia and swelling. Treatment primarily involves systemic chemotherapy. Standard treatment regimens consist of induction chemotherapy followed by consolidation and maintenance therapy, tailored according to response to initial chemotherapy. Some patients may require hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Patients with leukemia should avoid seafood, beef, mutton, dog meat, and chicken. They should also avoid high-fat, sweet, rich, greasy, and spicy foods, as well as fried items. Instead, they should consume light, easily digestible meals. It is essential to ensure adequate intake of protein, dietary fiber, fluids, and electrolytes.

Due to their compromised immune status, patients with acute leukemia are highly susceptible to colds and viral infections, which can exacerbate disease progression and complicate treatment. Therefore, it is crucial to maintain warmth and prevent colds or viral infections in daily life. Should infection occur, prompt medical attention is necessary. Self-medication should be strictly avoided, as many medications carry inherent toxicity (“all medicines have side effects”). Thus, all medications must be used cautiously and only under the guidance of qualified healthcare professionals. We hope this information is helpful to you!
