What Causes Diarrhea in the Morning?
This morning, I woke up and immediately felt abdominal pain upon opening my eyes, so I rushed to the bathroom—wondering whether I had eaten something spoiled, causing diarrhea early in the morning. So, what causes morning diarrhea?
What Causes Morning Diarrhea?
Possible causes of morning diarrhea include infectious diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Specifically:
- Infectious diarrhea: Individuals with unhygienic dietary habits or those who have recently undergone sudden changes in diet are more prone to intestinal infections, which may lead to diarrhea. This is often accompanied by abdominal pain, and some patients may also develop fever. These symptoms typically indicate an infectious inflammatory process. Prompt medical evaluation—including stool analysis—is recommended; blood tests (e.g., complete blood count) may also be necessary to assess for elevated white blood cell or neutrophil counts, helping confirm infection.
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): For individuals who frequently experience diarrhea upon waking but report no abdominal pain—or only mild discomfort—and no fever, with normal stool test results, IBS may be the underlying cause.

Diarrhea can lead to malnutrition. During episodes of diarrhea, intestinal absorption of nutrients is impaired. Malnutrition may directly cause symptoms such as dizziness, dry mouth, fatigue, palpitations, and chest tightness. Vitamin deficiencies may also occur, since diarrhea hinders vitamin absorption. Deficiencies can result in dull skin, dry and lusterless hair, and reduced immunity and resistance.

Diarrhea impairs digestion and reduces absorption of nutrients and vitamins, thereby weakening the body’s resistance and lowering immunity against infectious diseases and other infections. We hope this information is helpful to you!
