Introduction
Disposable masks cover a broad category, including not only surgical masks but also standard medical masks and medical protective masks. Medical protective masks refer to the commonly known N95 masks (U.S. standard) and KN95 masks (Chinese standard), as well as surgical masks; these can filter airborne particles larger than 5 μm in diameter. This is because the diameter of typical respiratory droplets is generally greater than 0.5 μm.

Medical surgical masks and disposable masks differ in structure, though both are single-use products. So, what are the differences between disposable masks and medical surgical masks?

Differences Between Disposable Masks and Medical Surgical Masks

“Disposable masks” is a broad category that includes medical surgical masks, standard medical masks, and medical protective masks. Medical protective masks refer to masks conforming to U.S. N95 standards or Chinese KN95 standards, as well as medical surgical masks—these can filter airborne particles larger than 5 μm. Since typical respiratory droplets measure over 0.5 mm in diameter, for the general public, standard medical surgical masks provide sufficient protection against the novel coronavirus and common bacteria.

Medical protective masks can block airborne particles larger than 3 μm and thus prevent transmission via aerosols. As aerosol particles generally measure less than 5 μm in diameter, such masks are specifically recommended for healthcare workers. When caring for patients, healthcare personnel must wear masks capable of preventing aerosol transmission—that is, medical protective masks. Standard medical masks offer the lowest level of protection; their filtration efficiency for airborne particles and bacteria is inferior to that of KN90 masks. Though they still provide basic protection, they are suitable only for non-clinical tasks such as nursing assistance, cleaning, or general use—and are therefore also known as disposable nursing masks.

In daily life, wearing appropriate masks helps prevent the spread of influenza and other respiratory infections, and reduces the risk of transmitting viruses to others. Wishing you good health and happiness!
