Is it okay to drink yogurt on an empty stomach in the morning?
It is generally not recommended to drink yogurt on an empty stomach, as yogurt is an acidic beverage. Consuming it while fasting may irritate the gastric mucosa, leading to increased gastric acid secretion. The lactic acid in yogurt can further stimulate the stomach upon ingestion, potentially causing symptoms such as gastric pain, acid reflux, and nausea in some individuals.

Additionally, morning blood glucose levels are typically low, and digesting and absorbing yogurt requires energy expenditure, which may precipitate hypoglycemia in susceptible individuals. Therefore, it is advisable to drink warm plain water or consume mild foods—such as rice porridge—in the morning, rather than cold yogurt on an empty stomach. The cold temperature of yogurt may further aggravate gastric mucosal inflammation. Under normal circumstances, yogurt is best consumed 30 minutes to 2 hours after a meal. By then, gastric juices have been partially diluted by food digestion, facilitating optimal absorption of yogurt’s nutrients and thereby promoting digestion and supporting overall health.
