What is phimosis?
Many men feel particularly self-conscious about phimosis, as it can adversely affect normal sexual intercourse between couples. However, some individuals remain unfamiliar with this condition. So, what exactly is phimosis?
What Is Phimosis?
The prepuce (foreskin) is the fold of skin covering the glans penis in males. Under normal circumstances, the foreskin lies beneath the penis, allowing full exposure of the glans. When the glans is completely covered by the foreskin, this is termed “redundant prepuce” (or “long foreskin”). If the foreskin cannot be retracted over the glans at all—even when the penis is flaccid—this condition is known as “phimosis.” Both redundant prepuce and phimosis increase the risk of accumulation of smegma, which may lead to infection or premature ejaculation; therefore, circumcision is often recommended. Individuals with redundant prepuce should seek timely medical treatment to prevent potential infections.

Phimosis is a common male urogenital condition. For men, having redundant prepuce poses multiple health risks. If left untreated, these risks progressively worsen and may significantly impair sexual function. Although phimosis may have a genetic component, if the foreskin remains non-retractable over the glans even after puberty and into adulthood, the condition is classified as true phimosis and typically requires a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed in a hospital setting.

If you suspect redundant prepuce or phimosis, consult a healthcare provider promptly. Surgical removal (circumcision) is an effective treatment option. We hope this information has been helpful!
