Introduction
In general, individuals with impaired kidney function may benefit from consuming foods such as Chinese yam, winter melon, crucian carp, apples, and black beans. Medications such as Shenfaining Capsules, Niaoduxing Granules, Jinsuibao Capsules, Bailing Capsules, and Haikun Shenxi Capsules may also be helpful. However, all medications should be used only under the guidance of a physician. Patients are advised to undergo regular follow-up testing of renal function and related parameters to enable timely adjustment of their treatment plan.

Generally, individuals with impaired kidney function may benefit from consuming foods such as Chinese yam, winter melon, crucian carp, apples, and black beans, as well as medications including Shenaoning Capsules, Niaoduxing Granules, Jingshuibao Capsules, Bailing Capsules, and Haikun Shenxi Capsules. Medications should be used only under the guidance of a physician.

I. Foods

1. Chinese Yam (Dioscorea opposita)

Rich in various vitamins, amino acids, and minerals, Chinese yam helps strengthen the spleen and stomach, nourish the kidneys, and replenish vital essence. Moderate consumption supports nutritional intake without imposing excessive burden on the kidneys.

2. Winter Melon

High in water content, winter melon possesses heat-clearing, diuretic, anti-edematous, and detoxifying properties. It helps increase urine output and alleviate the kidneys’ workload in fluid metabolism, thereby providing some relief from edema.

3. Crucian Carp

A high-quality source of protein with low fat content, crucian carp provides easily digestible and absorbable protein, supplying essential nutrition to patients while minimizing additional strain on renal protein excretion.

4. Apples

Apples are relatively low in potassium and rich in dietary fiber—particularly pectin—which promotes intestinal motility, maintains normal gastrointestinal function, and reduces absorption of intestinal toxins, thereby offering certain protective benefits to the kidneys.

5. Black Beans

Rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals, black beans help nourish the kidneys and replenish yin. However, due to their relatively high protein content, intake should be moderated; for example, small amounts may be cooked into black bean congee.

II. Medications

1. Shenaoning Capsules

These capsules invigorate qi and strengthen the spleen, activate blood circulation to resolve stasis, and unblock the bowels to eliminate turbid pathogens. They help alleviate symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and anorexia in patients with renal insufficiency and promote the elimination of endogenous toxins.

2. Niaoduxing Granules

This formulation clears turbidity via bowel regulation, strengthens the spleen and resolves dampness, and activates blood circulation to resolve stasis. By modulating gut microbiota, it enhances intestinal toxin elimination, thereby slowing the progression of renal dysfunction and reducing serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels.

3. Jingshuibao Capsules

Containing fermented Cordyceps mycelium powder as the primary active ingredient, these capsules tonify the lungs and kidneys, consolidate essence, and augment qi. They improve renal function, enhance systemic immunity, reduce proteinuria, and confer protective effects on the kidneys.

4. Bailing Capsules

Similar to Jingshuibao Capsules, Bailing Capsules are also prepared from fermented Cordyceps sinensis mycelium powder. They tonify the lungs and kidneys and replenish essence and qi, and are indicated for chronic renal insufficiency, helping to improve clinical symptoms and renal functional parameters.

5. Haikun Shenxi Capsules

Containing brown algae polysaccharide sulfate as the main active ingredient, these capsules clear turbidity and eliminate toxins. They lower serum creatinine and BUN levels in patients with renal failure, improve renal function, and enhance quality of life.

Patients are advised to undergo regular follow-up assessments of renal function and related parameters to enable timely adjustment of treatment strategies, slow disease progression, and improve quality of life.
