Introduction
Improper ice skating may lead to infertility. During ice skating, the range of motion is actually quite large—making it, in fact, an intense physical activity. When women engage in vigorous exercise during menstruation, menstrual blood may flow retrograde from the uterine cavity into the pelvic cavity. This retrograde menstruation can cause endometrial tissue fragments to implant in the ovaries, potentially leading to the formation of cysts.

Ice skating is a popular winter sport enjoyed by many people. But can ice skating cause infertility?

Can ice skating cause infertility?

Inappropriate or excessive ice skating may contribute to infertility. During skating, the body undergoes significant physical movement—essentially vigorous exercise. For women, intense physical activity during menstruation may promote retrograde menstruation, wherein menstrual blood flows backward from the uterine cavity into the pelvic cavity. This can lead to endometrial tissue implanting onto the ovaries, potentially forming cysts. Such a condition may progress to endometriosis, which commonly causes dysmenorrhea (painful periods) and, in severe cases, infertility.

Injuries sustained while ice skating—particularly to the external genitalia—can also adversely affect women’s health. The labia majora contain relatively loose subcutaneous tissue and an abundant, superficial venous plexus; thus, blunt trauma may easily rupture these vessels, resulting in significant bruising or hematoma formation. Such injuries may indirectly impair fertility. Moreover, excessive physical exertion from skating may first disrupt normal menstrual cycles. Intense exercise can suppress hypothalamic function, leading to endocrine imbalance and dysfunction. Consequently, sex hormone levels—including estrogen and progesterone—may become abnormal, further disrupting menstrual regularity and ultimately contributing to infertility.

In daily life, women should avoid ice skating indiscriminately, as it may pose a potential risk to fertility. Female skaters should therefore approach this activity with caution. We hope this article has been helpful. Wishing you a joyful life and optimal health!
