Can fetal heart rate measured via nuchal translucency (NT) ultrasound determine the baby’s sex?
Disease description:
I went to the hospital today for an NT (nuchal translucency) scan. The fetal heart rate was slightly elevated—can the heart rate measured during the NT scan determine the baby’s sex?
Regarding the use of nuchal translucency (NT) screening to determine fetal sex, this practice is neither accurate nor scientifically valid. NT screening—measuring the nuchal translucency thickness—is typically performed between 11 and 13 weeks of gestation and is primarily intended to assess the risk of fetal structural abnormalities or chromosomal disorders. However, many people mistakenly believe that fetal sex can be discerned through this examination. In reality, inferring fetal sex from NT results is entirely unreliable and lacks scientific foundation; such conclusions are not credible. Whether the fetus is male or female, each represents a precious member of the family and deserves equal respect and care as a new life.
