Disease description:

A friend said that type O blood is a “universal blood type” and can be transfused to people of any blood type. May I ask: Can type O blood be transfused to individuals with Rh-negative blood (colloquially known as “panda blood”)?

Although type O blood is often referred to as the “universal donor” type, blood transfusion regulations stipulate that it must not be administered to individuals with blood types other than O; only type-matched blood transfusions are permitted. Therefore, type O blood cannot be used for transfusion in individuals with Rh-negative blood—commonly known as “panda blood.” Rh-negative individuals who experience hemorrhage or severe anemia require transfusion of Rh-negative blood of the same ABO blood type to ensure effective treatment and prevent life-threatening hemolytic reactions. Thus, management must be tailored according to the individual’s specific clinical condition.
