The side effects of alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) chemical peels are primarily related to the concentration of the acid used and the duration of application. Excessively high AHA concentrations increase the risk of chemical burns and cause significant skin irritation, potentially leading to erythema or crusting. Poor control during treatment may also trigger infection, which can result in scarring. Prolonged application may cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
