My grandfather has elevated levels of the three lipids (triglycerides, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol). I’ve heard that atorvastatin calcium tablets can lower blood lipid and cholesterol levels. How effective are atorvastatin calcium tablets?

Atorvastatin calcium tablets are highly effective—primarily lowering total cholesterol, and also exerting a triglyceride-lowering effect. However, this medication carries certain adverse effects: some patients may experience elevated liver enzymes after use, and, in rare cases, rhabdomyolysis may occur—both warranting close attention. Prior to initiating therapy, liver function tests must be performed; the drug should only be administered if liver function is normal.
