What is autonomic neuropathy?
Disease description:
I’ve been suffering from insomnia lately, and my temper has become especially irritable. My doctor told me this is autonomic neuropathy—what exactly is autonomic neuropathy?
Autonomic neuropathy—also known as autonomic dysfunction—is a functional disorder. Diagnostic evaluations typically reveal no organic pathology. Autonomic dysfunction is relatively closely associated with age and emotional state; patients commonly present with symptoms such as irritability, agitation, insomnia, and dizziness. For this type of patient, medications that modulate and improve neurotransmitter function may be prescribed to alleviate symptoms.
