Recently, I’ve been feeling slightly unwell and underwent some medical tests, one of which was urinary microalbumin. Could you please explain what urinary microalbumin is?

Dr. Zhang Hongxia
Albumin is generally a large-molecule substance that cannot be excreted by healthy kidneys. The presence of albumin in urine (i.e., positive albuminuria) indicates impaired renal function. Early detection of microalbuminuria—elevated levels of albumin in the urine below the threshold detectable by routine dipstick testing—often reflects early-stage kidney dysfunction. Timely identification of such renal abnormalities enables prompt intervention and treatment, thereby preventing further deterioration of kidney function.
