Dr. Jin Zhongkui
The treatment of ascites in liver cirrhosis begins with restricting intake of water and salt. Daily water intake should be limited to less than 1,000 mL. If edema develops, prompt treatment is required. When large-volume ascites causes abdominal distension and impairs cardiopulmonary function, therapeutic paracentesis may be performed to relieve symptoms, followed by intravenous albumin administration. Patients should maintain a low-salt diet, eat small, frequent meals, and avoid smoking and alcohol consumption.
