Can an excess of white blood cells cause leukemia?
Disease description:
A few days ago, during a blood test, I discovered that I had an elevated white blood cell count and became worried about developing leukemia. Could you please tell me: Does an elevated white blood cell count cause leukemia?
An elevated white blood cell count does not necessarily indicate leukemia, as leukemia is characterized not only by a marked increase in white blood cells but also by symptoms such as bleeding and infection. Therefore, the elevation may simply result from a common inflammatory condition. A definitive diagnosis of leukemia requires bone marrow examination. Thus, if you are currently experiencing any concerning symptoms, you should visit a hospital for a repeat complete blood count (CBC). If inflammation is severe, symptomatic anti-inflammatory treatment may be administered.
