What is the normal value for the heart failure biomarker BNP?
Disease description:
I have been undergoing treatment for heart failure for some time and would like to know whether I have fully recovered. Could you please tell me the normal reference range for the heart failure biomarker BNP?
The BNP (B-type natriuretic peptide) test is used to aid in the diagnosis of heart failure and to assess disease severity. Internationally, the normal BNP level in adults is defined as <100 ng/L; for adults without a history of heart failure, the normal BNP level should be <80 ng/L. BNP levels also correlate with age—values tend to increase gradually with advancing age. Therefore, for middle-aged and older adults, the reference range for normal BNP levels may be appropriately extended to <300 ng/L.
