What does a low hematocrit mean?
Disease description:
Last week, during the company’s annual health check-up, my routine blood test report indicated that my hematocrit level was low. What does a low hematocrit mean?
A low hematocrit means that the hematocrit value falls below the normal reference range, which typically occurs due to decreased red blood cell production or increased red blood cell destruction—both leading to a reduced number of red blood cells. There are numerous causes of low hematocrit. First, pregnancy during the second and third trimesters should be considered. Second, gastrointestinal disorders—such as peptic ulcers, hemorrhoids, and anal fissures—may also contribute. Additionally, various types of anemia—including iron-deficiency anemia, aplastic anemia, and hemolytic anemia—commonly result in a low hematocrit.
