Can a woman with a bicornuate uterus deliver vaginally?
Disease description:
My friend was diagnosed with a double uterus (uterus didelphys). She is now five months pregnant and plans to deliver vaginally. May I ask whether vaginal delivery is possible with a bicornuate uterus?
Bicornuate uterus is generally not recommended for vaginal delivery. This condition is a type of congenital uterine malformation resulting from incomplete or abnormal development, which often leads to inadequate myometrial development. During labor, this may cause dystocia—due to abnormal uterine contractility and difficulty in cervical dilation—and even uterine rupture. Vaginal delivery in such cases carries increased risks of placental retention, postpartum hemorrhage, and postpartum infection. Additionally, after delivery, patients with bicornuate uterus may experience bleeding from the non-gravid horn due to decidual shedding, potentially compromising their health.
